My niece was born prematurely and died in infancy due to complications of prematurity and a devastating disease called necrotizing enterocolitis. Our family was devastated. As a neonatologist who cares for babies born prematurely or with other challenges that require special care in the neonatal ICU, I have dedicated my career to helping these most fragile infants.
