I have been doing this walk-a-thon for the March of Dimes for over ten years. My devotion for this orginization started back in 1996 when I went through an unfortunate miscarriage at twenty weeks of pregnancy. I went through emotional, physical, mental and spirtual suffering when I found out that my baby that I was carrying for twenty weeks, did not make it. In 2014, my niece Carmen, lost her son at 27 weeks. Lucas was born prematurely on January 6th, 2014. He had his first of two surgeries on the same day he was born to help him breathe. The next four days were filled with prayers and hope for him to pull through, but his multiple anomalies were bigger than him. His parents already knew Lucas was going to be born with a heart condition and a chin malformation. Being that the mother developed preclampsia and Lucas was going to be born premarture, his chances for survival were slim. Even so, Lucas was a fighter. However, shortly after his second surgery, during which his lung collapsed, on January 10th, 2014, Lucas left us. His parents feel the loss and the pain of their son every single day. So, I do this walk, for the baby I lost, for Lucas, and for all other mothers that have to endure something so tragic as losing a child.
March of Dimes is dedicated to bringing people together to tackle America's maternal and infant health crisis—one person, one community, and one step at a time. More than a series of walks, March for Babies is an annual tradition that supports moms and babies every day, every step of the way.
March for Babies connects friends, families, and coworkers to improve the health of families nationwide. Together with March of Dimes, each step forward brings us closer to a healthy future for all.
