Our journey into parenthood didn’t go the way we imagined. I was pregnant with identical twin girls, and at 20 weeks, we experienced the heartbreaking loss of one of our baby girls, we named Charlie. The rest of my pregnancy was high-risk, filled with fear and uncertainty. At 27 weeks, my water broke and after two weeks of being hospitalized, our daughter Emersyn was born at 29 weeks weighing 3.9lbs.
She spent 78 long days in the NICU. This was also all during COVID, when my husband and I were the only ones allowed to be there, making an already isolating experience feel more lonely and scary. From being intubated, breathing machines, feeding tubes, picc lines, etc., she had to overcome so many challenges. Fast forward to today – Emmi just turned 5 years old, and weighs 35lbs, is 40 inches tall, healthy and happy!!!
Finding a community of other moms and families who understand these struggles reminds me that we're not alone—and that support, love, and hope exist all around us. We are honoring our daughter Emmi, our older son Kaden, our older daughter Abby, our guardian angel Charlie and my whole family!
March of Dimes is dedicated to bringing people together to tackle America's maternal and infant health crisis—one person, one community, and one step at a time. More than a series of walks, March for Babies is an annual tradition that supports moms and babies every day, every step of the way.
March for Babies connects friends, families, and coworkers to improve the health of families nationwide. Together with March of Dimes, each step forward brings us closer to a healthy future for all.
