Our journey began in 2011 when we lost our first baby at 23 wks to an unknown cause. When I became pregnant with my sons, Austin and Elliott, a routine checkup at 16wks showed that I was dilated. I needed to be rushed to the hospital for an emergency cerclage to keep my babies from being born early. It was then we found out that I have an incompetent cervix and cannot carry babies to term without this procedure. This is why we lost our first baby. After what they call a "heroic" cerclage to save the twins, I was put on strict bedrest for 12 weeks. The boys were born at 27wks and 1 day weighing just under 2lbs each. They spent 4 months in the NICU before we were able to bring them home. There were many ups and downs while they were there but everyday was a battle won. Without the NICU team, equipment, knowledge and recourses our babies might have not made it. The March of Dimes is very important to our family for this reason.
