March of Dimes is important to me - and personal. Beyond my role as a neonatologist and physician-scientist, I am the dad of a prematurely born son. Nate was born at 35 weeks by emergency c-section, required intubation and ventilation, placement of umbilical lines, and surfactant. After 11 days, we got to bring him home. The NICU was terrifying for us - and coming home was even more scary because we constantly worried about him being okay.
We also remember my grandma Vi, who was afflicted with polio in adolescence and who carried her disability with dignity throughout her life. The March of Dimes sponsored life saving and life altering research to create vaccines so that polio is no longer something that we, as parents, have to worry about.
In Ohio, Alabama, and Oklahoma, we have seen the powerful impact of the March of Dimes - and look forward to March for Babies each year. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the journey of so many sick babies and their families, profoundly humbled by the trust they place in us as providers, and eternally grateful for those who provided Nate's care and graceful reassurance to my wife and me.
We participate in honor of those who survived and carry in our hearts those babies who never got to come home.
