It was January 19, 2015. I was 28 weeks pregnant, in labor, and clueless as a soon-to-be first time Mommy. When the doctors told me I was in labor, I vividly remember thinking, “They aren’t supposed to be here until April.” If it weren’t for the doctors and nurses, our story would have had a very different outcome. Our family was blessed to receive the care needed to carry Hudson and Bentli for 10 more days.
Hudson Layne and Bentli Rae were born 10 weeks premature, weighing 3.6 pounds and 3.0 pounds, respectively. They were quickly admitted into the NICU at BSA where Bentli became a resident for 46 days and Hudson for 52 days.
You hear stories about the emotional roller coaster ride you are on as a parent of a premature baby, but when that ride became our reality, there was not a thing on Earth that could have prepared us. It was our faith, family, medical teams, and the March of Dimes that carried us through the first days in our new roles as parents. We are grateful to the March of Dimes who brought about NICUs in the first place and developed life-saving treatments our babies received while there; and we are grateful to the NICU where Hudson and Bentli spent their first days, and the education and support that came during our darkest days as new parents. Today, Hudson Layne and Bentli Rae are amazingly strong and fearless children who make their Daddy and me better people just by knowing them. Their love for each other is breath-taking, and you will rarely see them without the other one nearby. It is such a privilege to share our story as the 2017 March for Babies Ambassador Family.
