Our March for Babies celebration is still on, but it looks a little different! We are rapidly preparing for a new, virtualized event that will be fun and engaging for everyone. This change in format aligns with the newly released CDC guidance for large events, to help ensure the safety and health of our participants. More details on our new format to come soon!

We're getting ready to walk in March for Babies! It promises to be a fun day out with people who share our passion for improving the health of babies. There'll be family teams, company teams and people walking with friends - it's a great feeling knowing we're all helping real families. Meet the Steele Family

In 2012, we were overwhelmed with joy to learn that we were expecting. We weren’t anticipating anything other than a healthy pregnancy, and the safe arrival of our baby boy. At 27 weeks into the pregnancy, Gena’s water broke without warning, and she was placed on hospital bedrest for the next 4 weeks. We were grateful for every day that we gained with him in utero, and for the two steroid shots that she received to help develop our baby’s lungs. On July 28th, at 31 weeks, our son Swisher was born. At 9 weeks premature, he weighed only 4 lbs, 1 oz, and was just 16 1/2 inches long. After just a quick glance, he was whisked off to the NICU. Watching Gena being rolled into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that first time from a hospital bed was surreal. The constant beeping and activity was overwhelming as we saw Swisher for the first time. He had more wires and tubes than we had ever seen on an adult, let alone a baby. Those 33 days in the NICU were some of the longest days of our lives as Swish battled respiratory distress, feeding issues, jaundice, and temperature control. On August 30th, 2012, weighing just over 5 lbs, we brought Swisher home– wire and tube free! Swisher is now 3 and a half, and is doing beautifully. We are incredibly grateful to the March of Dimes for all their research on prenatal care, surfactant therapy, steroid treatment and NICU best practices. Without their work, our story could have had a very different ending. We are excited to be serving as the 2016 Cedar Rapids March for Babies Ambassador Family, and to be giving back to a foundation that has given us so much. Sharing our story will help bring awareness to the importance of the March of Dimes and their mission, while also raising essential funds to support their life-saving research.
