"My water broke at 35 weeks into my pregnancy. My husband had the intellect to take me to the hospital and ignore my self-conscious nature. Ava received the steroid shots to aid in her lung development and we had begun the waiting game. After one week of inverted bed rest, I still had not gone into labor. We knew what little bit of a birth plan was long gone out the window, and we were to expect Ava the following day via cesarean section. Shocked, confused, and helpless… life was happening whether I was prepared or not. My mind could not keep up with the information as it unfolded, and it was as if we were suspended in time. The night before Ava’s delivery, I wrote her a letter. 'Dearest Ava,
Today is your birthday! Today is the day that you make me a mother. I’ve already made sure that you have the greatest father. I selfishly thought I was the most blessed person alive when I married him, and now we get to raise a beautiful little girl together. I am so petrified and excited to meet you. I can’t wait to see what color your eyes are. My water broke a week ago and I have been on bed rest until this day awaiting your early arrival. Your dad and I have so many exciting things to teach you, but can’t wait to see what you have to teach us. I am writing this letter by cell phone light while your daddy is sleeping soundly on the tiny couch by me. He said the most beautiful thing before he dozed off last night, he said “I want to teach Ava that God is what connects all humans to one another, whether you call him love or karma, it is in us all to be compassionate and to reason with one another." I love you so much and I’m going to miss you kicking me in the mornings and carrying you inside of me. You have changed my life forever and I haven’t yet met you. I love you always and forever.
Mommy-' Our daughter spent 31 days in the NICU. Ava came home and we are blessed with a happy story. We have a healthy beautiful daughter because of the research and advancements of the March of Dimes. Before Ava's birth we did not know what to expect, having my water break at 31 weeks was terrifying, but the doctors & nurses and staff at the hospital were prepared. Being this year's ambassador family is truly an honor, and we hope this wonderful narrative helps spread the support."
