The Roten Family

On October 22, 2014 at 17 weeks pregnant, we were told I had experienced preterm premature rupture of membrane (pprom), meaning my water had broken and I had very little amniotic fluid around the baby. The odds were stacked against us, 90% of women go into labor within the first 48 hours after rupturing. When this happened we were introduced to our high-risk doctor, Dr. David Lewis with USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital. After 4 weeks of bed rest at home and weekly ultrasound visits, I checked in to USA and received my first round of steroid shots and a 24-hour magnesium drip to prevent pre-term labor. I was finally 22 weeks, which is what USA considers viability. This began our 10-week stay at USA on bed rest monitoring our sweet baby girl. Bi-weekly ultrasounds showed that I continued to have very little fluid. This was a major concern due to her lungs not developing and being very small. We met with neonatologists and a NICU nurse educator and discussed what was to be expected when Emma-Kate did arrive. Emma-Kate was born January 27, 2015 at 31 weeks weighing 2 lbs 9 oz. As predicted her lungs were very small. Shortly after birth, she received two doses of surfactant, which is a protein that keeps small air sacs in the lungs from collapsing. The March of Dimes has helped develop surfactant therapy, which was introduced in 1990. We know Emma-Kate receiving this treatment played a huge role in her being on the ventilator for only a short period of time. Emma-Kate spent 63 days in the NICU and came home one day after her due date. The March of Dimes started the Prematurity Research Initiative 12 years ago funding research into causes of prematurity. We believe, that without the research going in to the causes of prematurity our daughter would not be here and in the great health she is in today. We would like to say thank you to the donors and volunteers of the March of Dimes, many of whom we will never know but have made a life changing impact on our family.
