When I was pregnant with Ethan I had no complications. There is no history of preterm birth in my family. One night I had some mild cramping, and in the morning I noticed some unusual discharge when I went to the bathroom. My OBGYN told me to go to labor and delivery where I found out I was having contractions at only 22 weeks pregnant. My doctor explained that at 24 weeks there would only be about a 50% chance of survival so they were going to try everything they could to get me to at least 24 weeks, but hoped for more time. I was kept in the hospital for a week hooked up to monitors and given medications to stop my labor. I was released at 23 weeks and put on strict bed rest. Unfortunately within a couple of hours of being back home I started having intense contractions and rushed back to the hospital. For reasons that couldn't be explained my body had stopped responding to the medication that was keeping me from going into labor. I had an emergency c-section. Ethan was born on November 14th, 2007 at 23 weeks, weighing barely over 12 ounces, and I was told he was too small to survive. Unfortunately because I was put all the way under for my c-section I never got to see him alive. The doctors could not explain to me why my body went into labor. The only explanation they were able to provide was "sometimes these things just happen". Due to the complications in my first pregnancy I was considered high risk with our daughter, Mia. We saw a specialist every two weeks, and had weekly progesterone shots to help reduce my risk of preterm labor. My doctor explained that because of my history of preterm labor I was more likely to experience preterm labor in my future births. Thankfully I made it to 37 weeks with Mia, and delivered her via c-section on March 29th, 2017. She was born healthy, and we are so thankful for our rainbow baby.
