More than a yearly walk, March for Babies is a community. Families, friends, and co-workers can connect while raising critical funds for research, education, advocacy, and programs and services so moms and babies get the best possible start. Because together, each step forward leads to a healthy future for us all. March for Babies. Every step counts!

Sahrhage Family

In May of 2017, after suffering 2 miscarriages and going through 6 months of fertility treatments, William and Emily were so excited to welcome their first child. Emily went in for her routine anatamoy scan in September of 2017 and that’s when their world changed. Doctors found that their baby had a marginal chord insertion and IUGR. They were told to return 4 weeks later for additional testing, where they found that their baby had not grown at all. They discovered Emily had incredibly elevated blood pressure and by 25 weeks pregnant, she was diagnosed with preclampsia and hospitalized. It was a difficult time for William and Emily, who were scared and unsure of what the future might hold for them and their little girl. At 26 weeks and 2 days pregnant, Emily gave birth to their baby girl, Anna Joy. Anna Joy was born only weighing 1 lb. 6 oz. Spending time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) can be frightening and overwhelming for parents, especially when they must go home each night and leave their precious babies behind. During their time at the hospital, Anna Joy had a slight heart murmur (that has since closed) and she was extubated at 2 days old for almost 2 weeks. After 87 days in the NICU, Anna Joy was finally able to come home. Today, she is a happy, healthy and fiesty 2 year-old! Like Anna Joy, about 380,000 babies are born too soon in the United States each year. Preterm birth is the leading cause of newborn death, and babies who survive an early birth may face long-term health challenges, including breathing problems, cerebral palsy, and intellectual disabilities. Even babies born just a few weeks early have higher rates of hospitalization and illness than full-term infants. William and Emily know the significant role that March of Dimes research played in helping their daughter grow and thrive. As the 2020 Lancaster March for Babies Ambassador Family, they will share their story and help raise awareness in support of healthier moms and stronger babies.
