Fort Wayne March for Babies Ambassador Story

The Kraus Family

Piper was born January 18th- on a Saturday evening in a winter storm. Thank goodness, I followed my instincts and we delivered her 30 minutes after arriving at the hospital. Piper was born at 24.5 weeks weighing in at 1 pound 15 ounces. She is a micropreemie. When she was born, immediately they put her on the ventilator, which she was on for 56 days. She was also on CPAP, Vapotherm, high flow and now on low flow oxygen. Piper has scared us all multiple times- she has everything a micro would have- multiple blood transfusions, fresh frozen plasma and platelet transfusions. She has a PDA, she had internal bleeding/hemorrhages, multiple medications to help keep it all under control. Piper contracted a staph Epi and was in isolation for 23 days. The worst, so far, has been when her sats began to drop and she was requiring more oxygen. She had a gram Staph bacilli negative infection- multiple lumbar puncture, blood gasses, and constant careful watching. They suggested we get her baptized. The doctors met with us and we discussed end of life. A time we will never forget. Our team worked tirelessly with her... and she survived it all. She has had multiple x rays and ultrasounds, more than 40 that I have wrote down. We are officially on Day 80 today and our speech therapist is amazing- she works with us to help pace Piper on her tiny bottle-feeds that we attempt every 3 hours. Piper controls it all and we have learned to go off her. In the current state of COVID-19 - the main entrance feels like a court room.... we have to give all information every single time we enter, show our band, and then once at NICU (neonatal intensive Care unit) doors, our vitals are taken. It is very scary to think of everything Piper has fought off she could get this virus. Her respiratory team is so outstanding and I just love everyone on her floor. We are excited to get Piper home to meet her two sisters and one brother but we are also so nervous. She will most likely be coming home on oxygen. To think of the other kids and her with her past and her new machines may throw us off a bit. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful staff here but so out of our comfort zone. Every day gets easier, but no one nor nothing can prepare you to watch your 1 pound 15 ounce baby be forced to live. God is so Great.
