Riley’s issues began at 31 weeks into her mom’s pregnancy. All of the amniotic fluid that was supposed to be there to keep Riley safe was gone. Riley’s mom was rushed to a hospital that had a NICU just in case she had to come early. In the wee hours of the morning Riley made her appearance. She wasn’t breathing, but was intubated and brought back to life. The next 13 weeks proved difficult with one day that stands out. “Mrs. Duncan your daughter coded, we got her back, but not sure what is going on.” Riley had suffered from necrotizing enterocolitis. The next two weeks were difficult, but Riley proved stronger! Riley had to have her feedings thickened, which only lengthened the NICU stay. Just as we were waiting to go we received the call again stating Riley was having issues and she needed blood. One minute we were getting her room ready for her arrival and the next minute she had yet another IV, but this time in her head and more hair shaved off. Days passed and Riley again proved she was stronger than anything thrown at her! Riley is now one year old and the only memory of her NICU stay is the shadow box on the wall to remind us all of how far she has come. Riley, like all preemies, has gone through more than her four older brothers will ever see. She and all other preemies are stronger than we can imagine! We “March” for them and the hope they give us each day! Thank you Riley for showing us what real strength is!
