About March for Babies

Premature birth is the #1 killer of babies. But it doesn't have to be. The money you'll raise in March for Babies supports programs that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. It also funds research to find causes and preventions. Join 5,000 champions for babies at the California State Capitol in Sacramento who are committed to making a difference in the fight against birth defects, premature bith and other health problems that threaten babies' lives. March for Babies brings people together through events across the country and online while raising critical funds to tackle America's maternal and infant health crisis—one person, one community, and one step at a time. More than a yearly walk, March for Babies is a community. Christian Nathaniel Rios Ashley

After trying for several years, Christian’s parents Christina and Daniel were thrilled when they got pregnant. Christina’s initial tests came back normal and her pregnancy was going well. At 22 weeks into her pregnancy, she was quickly hospitalized for incompetent uterus and put on bed rest. The doctors told Christina repeatedly, “We need to get this baby to 24 weeks!” Christina received steroids and magnesium to help the baby’s lungs grow and brain function. Despite their dedicated efforts, Christian began his entrance into the world just shy of 24 weeks weighing 1 pound 4 ounces. The doctors prepared both Daniel and Christina for the worst. However, Christian’s parents were not willing to give up and insisted that they do whatever they could to help their baby stay alive. They rushed him out of the room and his mom did not see him for hours. Christian struggled hard his first 24 hours of life, and his struggle lasted for months. Christian dealt with a host of issues. After over four months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Christian was allowed to go home. Christian is now 2 1/2 years old. He is cognitively on track for his age and making good improvements with fine motor coordination delayed by his early birth. Extremely premature babies like Christian, are often the face of grace and resilience; they are living testimonies to the lifesaving power behind the March of Dimes.
