ABOUT MARCH FOR BABIES
Join us for the 48th annual March of Dimes March for Babies! 2018 is a special year for the March of Dimes as we will celebrate our 80th anniversary. We plan to make March for Babies the best ever. March for Babies draws thousands of people across the islands who come together to support the March of Dimes goal which is, simply put: A fighting chance for every baby. Each year, 1 in 10 babies is born premature in Hawaii. Did you know that premature birth is the #1 killer of babies? That’s why, for 80 years, the March of Dimes has fought for little ones who can’t fight for themselves. With your support, we can find the causes of prematurity and birth defects together through research, education, treatments and more.

The Efhan Family

Kaulana Efhan was flown to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children on Oahu from Kauai. "It was scary because I was alone.My husband Vince couldn’t get a flight for 2 days" Kaulana said. Kaulana gave birth to Vaylen 8 weeks early. Vaylen weighed 5 pounds 14.5 ounces and spent 3 long months in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). During that time they found he had calcifications on his brain and liver. Vaylen still goes back to Kapiolani for annual tests to see if the calcifications have grown. “Every day was an accomplishment as he gained weight and progressed. The kind, nurturing support of the March of Dimes NICU Family Support Coordinator and volunteers helped make our stay a little easier,” said Kaulana. When Vaylen was finally able to go home, he still had a feeding tube. Thanks to treatments developed by the March of Dimes and the doctors and nurses at Kapiolani Vaylen is a happy, healthy 4 year old.
