Join us for the 48th annual March of Dimes March for Babies! 2018 is a special year for the March of Dimes as we will celebrate our 80th anniversary. We plan to make March for Babies the best ever. March for Babies draws thousands of people across the islands who come together to support the March of Dimes goal which is, simply put: A fighting chance for every baby. Each year, 1 in 10 babies is born premature in Hawaii. Did you know that premature birth is the #1 killer of babies? That’s why, for 80 years, the March of Dimes has fought for little ones who can’t fight for themselves. With your support, we can find the causes of prematurity and birth defects together through research, education, treatments and more.
The walk starts and ends at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand on the Kalakaua Avenue side of the bandstand. It goes up Monsarrat Avenue to Paki Avenue and then up to the first look out on Diamond Head Road, just after the light house where the turn around and water station is. Walkers then return back to Kapiolani Park walking along Kalakaua Avenue to the finish line.

The Ortega Brodie Family

Jan. 20, 2018 was my due date for our second child. Mark and I have been blessed with Tyler and were so ecstatic when we found out that we were going to have Levi. Tyler especially was so excited to have a baby brother. On Nov. 16, 2017 Levi was born at 4:48 am, weighing 2 lbs. 8.9 ounces & 15.5 inches long. I was just 30 weeks & 5 days along. When he first came out, a sigh of relief escaped me as I heard my baby cry the smallest cry I’ve ever heard. I saw Levi for just a couple of minutes before they transported him up to the NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit). I felt so helpless. All I could think about was if my baby was going to be ok & how long will it be until we can take him home. When I went to visit Levi in the NICU that night, I remember hardly being able to stand & thinking that I was so sorry that my body couldn’t hold him in longer than it did & not knowing what our NICU journey would be like at all. Mark & I visited every day. For a while though, it was very difficult sitting in his room. But as the days & nights progressed, so did Levi. Our nurses & doctors at Kapiolani have been absolutely amazing. They’ve been the “parents” to Levi when we’re not around & for them, we’ll be eternally grateful. Every year, we donated to the March of Dimes. Going through this NICU journey, we learned how much the organization has to offer which opened up a whole new perspective for us. We realized that no one ever thinks that they will have a preemie baby and wanted to do what we could to help other families. Seeing that purple bag on our chair with all the great information in it, let me know that we’re not going to go through this alone. Amy, the March of Dimes NICU Family Support Coordinator, is always wonderful & cheerful when we see her. She also makes Tyler feel just as special as Levi. She too will always have a special place in our hearts. We hope our story finds a special place in your heart and that donations continue to support this organization so that one day, preterm births & birth defects will be a thing of the past. Levi now weighs almost 7 pounds. We can finally see the light at the end of our long tunnel and can’t wait until homecoming day.
