MEET THE BROGANS
When Stephen and Mindy Brogan found out they were pregnant for the first time, they found the thought of bringing a life into the world madly exhilarating and wonderfully terrifying at the same time. When they found out their baby was in danger, the fear and helplessness was overwhelming, and for them, everything stopped.
In the beginning, everything with the pregnancy seemed to be going normal. All tests with baby Brogan came out perfectly. The only abnormality was a bit more nausea than they’d hoped, but Mindy figured this was the sacrifice a mother bears. As things progressed, doctor's visits showed positive signs of baby's growth and development. During these visits, where the Brogans heard the heart beat the first time and found out their bundle of joy was a girl, the excitement, anticipation and nausea all persisted and seemed to grow with each passing day.
After 29 weeks, a sharp abdominal pain told Mindy that something wasn't right. The Brogans went to the hospital, and within a four hour period, Mindy was diagnosed with HELLP Syndrome, a severe form of pre-eclampsia and had an emergency C-section. On January 3, 2017, as snow fell outside, Mila Kay Brogan came into the world weighing 1lb. 14oz. and was 13 ¼ in. long.
Mila would spend almost two months in the NICU at Overland Park Regional Medical Center, where she showed her spunk and strength early on. After four days, she was breathing on her own. As the weeks passed, Mila earned the nickname "feisty" from the nurses who attended to her for her levels of energy and insistence on showing them just how she wanted to be positioned. The Brogans, as new parents, had the opportunity to learn about many topics related to the care and development of their baby during weekend classes at the hospital. With snow falling for the first time since her birth, Mila - at four pounds and counting - went home with Stephen and Mindy after 56 days in the NICU.
Today, she is doing amazing, as a happy, healthy two year old! Mila continues to show her personality, growing bigger and stronger every day. She loves Minnie Mouse, Puppy Dog Pals, dance parties, singing, strawberries and taking her dogs on walks as often as possible!
