Important Update

Our March for Babies celebration is still on, but it looks a little different! We are rapidly preparing for a new, virtualized event that will be fun and engaging for everyone. This change in format aligns with the newly released CDC guidance for large events, to help ensure the safety and health of our participants. More details on our new format to come soon!

COVID-19 is only compounding the current maternal and infant health crisis facing our nation. While much remains unknown about the virus and its effects on pregnant women, unfortunately, we know from past public health emergencies that pregnant and lactating women are often overlooked as interventions to prevent or treat the disease are developed and distributed. As we face this public health emergency together, it is more important than ever before that we continue to fundraise and rally to fight for the health of all moms and babies. We need your help now more than ever!

I want to reassure you that our March for Babies celebration is still on! We need your help in continuing to rally the community around our cause for healthier moms and babies. We rely heavily on the engagement and fundraising activities in the time leading up to our event to support research, advocacy, and programs dedicated to moms and babies. We are excited to share new, virtual ways for us to connect and fundraise in the coming weeks.  We will share more details here and by emailing our participants.

And don’t forget - March of Dimes is here to serve as a resource for you, providing the latest information on COVID-19 on our webpage. You can also learn about our newly launched COVID-19 Intervention and Support Fund to ensure families stay informed about COVID-19, and that interventions are developed with moms and babies top of mind and then distributed so everyone across our country has access. Find more here.

In support of March for Babies, we ask that you continue to sign up so you can recieve Atlanta March for Babies fundraising challenges with some very cool prizes throughout the season.

Our ambassador family

The McLean Family

Hello! We are The McLeans, 2020 Atlanta March of Dimes March for Babies Ambassador Family. We are very proud to hold that title and share our story of our very personal connection to the March of Dimes. On March 27, 2017, our son, Tristan Kamau McLean, was born at 24 weeks 2 days gestation. Our little man was a quiet warrior (the meaning of his middle name) and stole our hearts from the first moments of life. There was never a day that passed where we weren’t in the NICU visiting him and doing what we could to care for him. We were excited to bring our little man home by the late summer. Unfortunately, Tristan developed NEC and succumbed to his condition at 32 days old. It was sudden, as I was just holding my bright eyed boy in my arms as he wiggled his arms out of his swaddle. That was on Tuesday, and by Thursday night he was gone. We were devastated. We walk because I was fortunate enough to have a perinatal team who supported me for weeks on inpatient bedrest before Tristan’s arrival. They helped me reach 24 weeks after my contractions started at about 19 weeks. Tristan received the best NICU care from his nurses. We can never explain how thankful we are for the way they looked after our little boy and the support they provided us as NICU parents. I was told “ you may cry in here, but you’ll never cry alone. We are here to support and encourage you. We will get you through this,” and they lived up to that promise. In addition, March of Dimes researchers are working to find the cause of complications like NEC, so that other parents won’t have to experience what we did. We are incredibly grateful for the work that the March of Dimes is doing. We hope that others support this cause to give Moms and Babies a better chance.
