Ambassador Family

The Oldehoff Family

Meet our 2020 Denver March for Babies Ambassador Family, the Oldehoff’s! Dan and Justina were married for ten years when they moved across the country for great job opportunities. It was right after their move that they learned they were pregnant with Carter. It was an unexpected, wonderful surprise for them, after being told it wasn’t likely Justina could become pregnant. They were nervous the entire first trimester and aside from some sickness, it was a perfect pregnancy. They found out they were having a boy and were looking forward to his arrival on May 11th, 2019. On January 18th, 2019 at 23 weeks and 6 days Justina let Dan know that she was going to see the doctor because of increased fluid and thought that everything was going to be ok. Justina was given an ultrasound and it was during that time her doctor became very concerned. Justina was then sent to the hospital because she was 3 centimeters dilated and contractions had started. At the hospital, the Neonatologist prepared them for the likeliness of survival if Carter was born at 24 weeks. The hospital then administered Magnesium, it would delay the labor but there was no way to find out for how long. On January 21st, 2019 at 9:06pm, Carter Moore Oldehoff was born. He was a micro preemie at 24 weeks and days, weighing 1 pound 8 ounces and 12 ¼ inches long. Carter was born fighting for his life and after 74 hours, he passed away. He was born with NEC, which was not repairable and took his last breath in his dad’s arms on January 24th, 2019 at 11:22pm. Three months after Carter past away, and the day before the 2019 March for Babies, Dan and Justina were shocked to find out they were pregnant again. The pregnancy was deemed high risk and at 15 weeks, she began to receive cerclage, weekly progesterone injections, and at 18 weeks was put on bed rest. At 21 weeks, Justina’s cervical length was gone and she experienced funneling. It was at this time Dan and Justina had to have difficult conversations with her neonatal team and the possibility of losing another son. At almost 24 weeks, Justina was admitted to the hospital, and given her first round of steroids for the baby’s lungs and remained at the hospital on bed rest. At 27 weeks, Justina’s water broke and she began experiencing contractions, she started magnesium and it delayed her labor. At 29 weeks and 3 days, Justina began to have contractions, but there was no tension on the stitches. Unfortunately, Justina spiked a fever and they found she had the chorio infection and needed to have the cerclage removed. Justina was rushed to have an emergency C-section and their son Aron Parker was born on October 8, at 9:08pm, weighing 3 pounds and 8 ounces. Aron was in the NICU for 49 days and sent home the day before Thanksgiving. After the passing of Carter, Dan and Justina became involved with March of Dimes in February of 2019, it was one of the resource introduced to them while they were in the NICU. Their passion is to help others through Carter’s legacy, while fundraising to help March of Dimes fund research that can lead to preventions for prematurity and loss. They also became motivated to create their own foundation that provides additional information to families that are in NICU or experiencing loss.
