The McGrath Family

Baby Patrick arrived six weeks early by cesarean section due to complications with his placenta. He spent 30 days in the Advocate Children’s Hospital Oak Lawn NICU- it was a very difficult time for the McGrath family. The NICU can be frightening and overwhelming for parents, especially when they must return home without their baby. Their experience was complicated by COVID-19 when Patrick’s parents, Jim and Mary, were notified that someone in their operating room tested positive for the virus. They had to wait 10 days until they were able to see their baby. During his NICU stay, Patrick overcame a number of obstacles. Just 24 hours after birth he developed a fever and underwent a spinal tap and three separate antibiotics to counter infection. He was later given a feeding tube, and was placed on a CPAP machine and ventilator to address his weakening lungs. Due to COVID-19 visiting restrictions, Jim and Mary could not visit their baby as often as they would have liked. Scheduled Zoom visits using laptops provided by the hospital helped them connect virtually with Patrick and the NICU staff. Today, Patrick is a healthy 7 ½ month-old who is meeting all of his developmental milestones. He loves playing with his toys and can’t wait to be able to run with his older sister, Molly. “We are honored to be this year’s South Suburban March for Babies Ambassador Family,” says Mary. “This pandemic has been so hard on so many families and we want others to know they are not alone. This is our way of giving back with the hope that others going through a NICU journey will receive the support that we did.”
