2021 Ambassador Family

Freiburger Family

After the birth of our first daughter, we were excited to grow our family. Unfortunately, conception came with challenges. Over the next several years, we experienced two ectopic pregnancies and three miscarriages. We reached out for help and entered the journey of IVF. We were elated when we learned we were expecting in 2017. At 32 weeks, Monica was admitted to the hospital on bed rest related to placenta previa—a condition that can cause severe bleeding during pregnancy and delivery. Only two short weeks later, our daughter, Hayes, came into this world too soon at only 34 weeks gestation. We were not prepared for the 5 lbs, 11 oz dynamic child who would spend the start of her life fighting in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). During our time in the NICU, Hayes faced many challenges that premature birth presents. She was jaundiced, needed help breathing, eating, and overcoming apnea spells. After five weeks we were finally able to bring her home and our family of four was finally under one roof. We are still learning about the long-term effects of her premature birth. She has faced gross motor skill delays and challenges for which she has received therapy. She has asthma and sees a specialist at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics for underdeveloped lungs, as well as an ENT for her ears. Every family deserves a healthy pregnancy. Our blessing, Hayes, would have had dramatically different outcomes if not for the early detection and intervention that was afforded through research by March of Dimes. We are honored to serve as the 2021 Eastern Iowa March for Babies Ambassador Family. We are excited to be a part of a larger movement to improve access to prenatal care and to ensure that every mom and baby is healthy. We are especially proud to be giving back to an organization whose mission is inspired by all babies, those born healthy and those who need help to survive and thrive. Thank you so much for your support! Dan, Monica, Hadley and Hayes Freiburger
