Sigma Gamma Rho - Zeta Tau Sigma supports March for Babies

Zeta Tau Sigma Chapter runs for Cahlil Haylett, the eldest son of Gamal and Christen Haylett and the grandson of Soror Ethel Goodwine, Zeta Tau Sigma Chapter (Prince George’s County, MD). Cahlil was born prematurely on August 15, 2008 at 27 weeks and 3 days weighing in at 1 pound and 8 ounces.

At the 20-week screening, Cahlil was determined to be suffering from inter-uterine growth restrictions, meaning he was not receiving enough nutrients to adequately grown in the womb due to a faulty placenta.  The blood flow in the umbilical cord was flowing in two directions, this is considered extremely dangerous for a growing fetus.  Doctors determined that it would be safer to deliver Cahlil early so they can assist and monitor his growth outside the womb.  When Cahlil was born he was immediately connected to a ventilator for 11 days to assist him in breathing until he was transitioned to a c-pap machine, and then to a nasal cannula.  Cahlil remained in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for 12 weeks and 3 days.

Today, Cahlil is growing and thriving well! He is an awesome big brother to his younger sister and brother. Cahlil enjoys playing soccer, singing in the honors chorus, playing the trumpet, video games, and he is a purple belt in karate. The Haylett Family is extremely thankful to God, all of their family/friends for their prayers, and the host of doctors and nurses that assisted in Cahlil’s care during his stay at the NICU.

The March of Dimes organization helps provide support to mothers and babies to try and reduce premature birth.  The organization provides research, programs, education and support that is life changing and comforting to the babies and the families in the NICU. Zeta Tau Sigma is proud to stand with the Haylett family to raise money for the March of Dimes and their efforts to reduce premature births.

When it comes to giving families the best possible start, we all have the power to help.

March of Dimes is dedicated to bringing people together to tackle America's maternal and infant health crisis—one person, one community, and one step at a time. More than a series of walks, March for Babies is an annual tradition that supports moms and babies every day, every step of the way.

March for Babies connects friends, families, and coworkers to improve the health of families nationwide. Together with March of Dimes, each step forward brings us closer to a healthy future for all.
