Birth Equity is defined as “the assurance of conditions of optimal births for all people with a willingness to address racial and social inequities in a sustained effort.” (National Birth Equity Collaborative, 2018). In America, an African American baby is three times more likely to be born premature and not make it to their first birthday. Also, African American women are more likely is suffer fatal complications after childbirth.?
Every day, thousands of babies are born too soon, too small and often very sick. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has partnered with the March of Dimes since 1972, committed to informing the public, raising funds and taking action to help prevent premature births.
The chapter members send letters to our elected officials and encourage them to sponsor a resolution in Congress commemorating November as Prematurity Awareness Month! During that month the chapter Zetas, Amicae and ZMN conducted prematurity awareness programs in churches around the community and wore purple on November 17th, World Prematurity Day.
We support the sorority's Stork’s Nest Programs. Stork’s Nest is a national project of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in cooperation with the March of Dimes designed to encourage expectant mothers to seek early and continued prenatal care, thereby increasing the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality. Nationwide, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. sponsors over 100 Stork’s Nests.
