In the heart of Northwest Indiana, the Steel City Alphas continue a legacy that began more than a century ago—one rooted in scholarship, leadership, and service to all humankind. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., founded on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University, emerged as the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men. From its earliest days, Alpha men have stood at the forefront of social change, community uplift, and advocacy for the most vulnerable.
That legacy lives on today through the Brothers of the Gamma Rho Lambda Chapter, proudly serving NWI since 1947. As “servants of all,” we carry forward the charge set by our Jewels: to use our collective strength to improve the world around us. One of the most meaningful ways we do this is through our national partnership with the March of Dimes.
Alpha Phi Alpha’s relationship with the March of Dimes spans decades, built on a shared commitment to protecting mothers and babies. What began as a national service initiative has grown into a powerful collaboration focused on ending premature birth, supporting families in crisis, and ensuring that every child has the healthiest start possible.
Through this partnership, Alpha chapters across the nation mobilize to raise awareness, fund lifesaving research, and stand with families navigating the challenges of pregnancy and early childhood. For the Steel City Alphas, this mission is personal. It reflects our belief that strong communities begin with strong families—and that every child deserves the chance to thrive.
The Steel City Alphas march because too many families in our communities face preventable hardships. We march because health disparities continue to impact Black mothers and babies at alarming rates. We march because our founders taught us that leadership is not a title—it is an action.
