Our Accenture March of Dimes team is committed to raising as much money as possible to support colleagues, friends, families, and strangers within the DC area that have all been touched and supported by the March of Dimes.  We hope that you can join our team through membership or individual contributions so that we may make an impact within our community.  Let’s all march together in order to give each baby a fighting chance.

Why we walk

Premature birth (before 37 weeks of pregnancy) is the largest contributor to the death of babies in the U.S.  Babies who survive an early birth often face serious lifelong health problems including breathing problems, jaundice, vision loss, cerebral palsy, and intellectual delays.  Preterm birth increased again in 2017 for the THIRD consecutive year after nearly a decade of decline in numbers.  March of Dimes reports that in 2017: 

• Over 9.9% of all births in the U.S. were premauture
• Virginia (9.5%), Maryland (10.5%) and Washington D.C. (10.6%) all represented increases or non-improvements in preterm births from 2016-2017
• The March of Dimes goal for premature birth rate in the U.S. is 8.1% by 2020

Bottom Line:  We got a lot of work to do to decrease our premature birth rates as a region and a country.

So what?  With no singular cause of preterm birth, the March of Dimes represents a national champion in the fight for research, education and family support of preterm babies in order to give every baby a fighting chance.  Your donation enables the March of Dimes to fund four impact areas:

1. Expanding scientific research
   March of Dimes currently has a network of five Prematurity Research Centers identifying unknown causes of premature birth
2. Increasing education
   Social media campaigns and other communications are generated by March of Dimes to educate women and healthcare professionals to reduce risks of preterm births.
3. Strengthening advocacy through policy
   March of Dimes works to ensure government policies and programs create a community within our country to foster healthy pregnancies and babies.
4. Improving clinical care programs and practice
   March of Dimes is the primary organization to run signature programs and curriculum that support mothers and babies (Supportive Pregnancy Care) and families with preterm babies within the NICU Family Support.
