Born Too Soon, Strong Beyond Measure — Sofia’s Story
After nearly ten years of waiting, we were overjoyed to be expecting our baby girl. But at just 27 weeks, everything changed. A sudden infection led to an emergency C-section, and Sofia was born three months early — weighing only 1 pound, 12 ounces.
She was so tiny, she fit in the palm of our hands.
Sofia spent almost 90 days in the NICU, fighting to breathe and grow stronger each day. There were moments I could only sit beside her because her fragile body couldn’t handle stimulation. The first time I held her during kangaroo care lasted just minutes before alarms sounded and nurses rushed in. We went home every night without our baby, praying she would be okay.
But Sofia is a fighter.
After nearly three months, she finally came home. The journey didn’t end there — specialists, breathing treatments, and ongoing challenges followed. Today, she is an incredible 11-year-old: kindhearted, smart, resilient, and strong beyond measure.
Our family knows how critical support, research, and specialized care are for babies born too soon.
March of Dimes helps families like ours by funding lifesaving research to prevent premature birth, advocating for healthy moms and babies, supporting NICUs, and providing resources and education during some of the most difficult days a family can face. They work every day to improve maternal and infant health so that more babies can celebrate healthy birthdays.
