My pregnancy with my daughter Cameron was smooth and uneventful for the first 29 weeks. My husband and I were gearing up for our baby shower and looking at birthing classes, when we first saw our daughter's heart fluttering rapidly on the screen. She has developed an arrythmia, supraventricular tachycardia, causing her heart to race as fast as it could. It all felt a little ironic, considering I am a scientist, who specializes in the biology of the heart. I'd spent much of my time in the lab, watching heart cells beat in a dish, and now I was sitting on the ultrasound table, watching my daughter's heart struggle to maintain a rhythm.
Four days after we first saw her arrhythmia, I could no longer feel her moving. Luckily, we lived in Boston, with access to some of the best care in the country. The night of June 3rd, 2022, on National Donut Day, our daughter Cameron was born via emergency C-section. Over the next few days, a talented team of neonatologists and pediatric cardiologists worked together to figure out what had happened to Cameron and how to treat her. Eventually, they learned how to control her arrhythmia, and after 53 exhausting days in the NICU, Cameron finally came home.
We are forever grateful for the amazing care she received. She had access to music, occupational, and physical therapy during her stay in the NICU, helping her to overcome a number of developmental challenges. Today, Cameron is an adorable, active, and sassy preschooler. We recognize that not every family is a lucky as us to have access to such phenomenal care.
