The Harrisons

The Harrison's journey began in January 2005 when they discovered that their baby would be born with three birth defects: one defect in which the esophagus is connected with the trachea known as tracheoesophageal fistula, the second defect was radial dysplasia where the radius bone of the forearm did not form properly, and the third defect was a degree of a congenital heart defect. Even though they were not originally due until March 3, Rachel began early stages of labor on January 24. Given all of Ryan’s issues and the fact that he was in distress, her doctor advised he should be born via cesarean-section. The major battle they fought while Ryan was in the newborn intensive care unit, was his heart’s ability to oxygenate his blood. After many weeks and a battle with pneumonia, heart surgery was scheduled and finally happened on April 1. During surgery, and while on bypass, Ryan’s blood pressure dropped so low that he suffered a brain injury. The injury was too severe and he was never able to recover. Ryan passed away April 2. There is a sign on the walk path at March for Babies that says “one day… every baby will be born healthy”, and that perfectly sums up the Harrison family’s hope for every family. They look forward to seeing you on April 22 at Panther Island Pavilion! #marchforbabies
