Gonzalez Family

I found out I was pregnant with our last child in the spring of 2014. We were so excited to find out that we were having a boy after having our three girls. My pregnancy was seemingly average. No health issues, even my age (33 years) was not a health risk. I was low on iron and needed to have iron transfusions but my body took to them well. On October 7, 2014 at 33 weeks, I had gone to work and walked around the large campus. When I arrived home I noticed that I hadn’t had much fetal movement that day. I called my nurse and she advised I go to triage to be checked. I had my 2 year old daughter with me and I waited until my 17 year old daughter came home from school so she could help me. When we arrived at the Providence Pavilion, I could not find parking and we ended up walking a really long way to get to triage. Once I checked in, I gave a couple urine samples and waited around to be seen. The nurses hooked me up to fetal monitors and one nurse pressed the red button on the wall when all of a sudden six nurses immediately rushed into the room. They advised my daughter to take my youngest out of the room and they were ready to do an emergency c section right then and there. The baby’s heart rate had dropped between 40-60bpm but stabilized quickly. My oldest daughter called my husband and he was about an hour away. We spent 3 days in the antepartum unit under constant monitoring. Dominic's heart rate would decel randomly but he would recover on his own. My doctor prepared us for a 2 week stay. I had 24 hour monitoring as well as several ultrasounds over the course of those 3 days. The hospital also allowed my 2 year old to spend the night in my bed with me since she had never been away from me overnight. On October 10th, just as I thought I might be going home, a different doctor said we would have our baby that day. If I was earlier in my pregnancy, every day in the womb counts but at this gestation it wasn’t worth the risk. We scheduled my Emergency/Scheduled C Section for 5pm. Dominic Jarin Gonzalez was born 10.10.14 at 5:44pm at 33weeks6days gestation. He was 4lbs 7oz and 17 3/4" inches long. When I finally saw him in the NICU he had an IV but thankfully had no breathing issues. I had two steroid shots while in antepartum prior to delivery which was imperative to boost his lung development before birth. The doctors said his umbilical cord was wrapped in a "figure 8" around his legs and when he’d kick his heart rate would drop. He was essentially cutting off his own “air supply”. We stayed 17 days in the NICU while Dominic learned to suck, swallow, and breathe. He took to nursing very quickly even after not having much skin to skin at first and gained weight faster than expected. I was discharged on October 13th and Dominic came home on October 27th, 2014.
