In 2011, we were thrilled to find out that we were expecting not one baby, but two! Our excitement quickly turned to fear when my water unexpectedly broke 28 weeks into my pregnancy.
Being 12 weeks early, Cole weighed just 3 pounds, 7 ounces and Lauren weighed a mere 1 pound, 13 ounces. They were quickly intubated and transported to the University of Iowa Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Scott was able to make the trek to Iowa City, but I had to stay behind to recover from surgery.
Lauren and Cole spent the next several weeks under intensive care, growing, learning to maintain their body temperature, drink from a bottle, and breathe on their own. After 6 1/2 long weeks in the University of Iowa's NICU, Lauren and Cole were transported back to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque for an additional 10 days of monitoring. Finally, they were able to come home together – tube and wire free! Cole weighed over 7 pounds and Lauren weighed just shy of 5 pounds! We could not have been more excited to have our babies home and our family of 5 together at last!
Today, Cole and Lauren are active 7 year olds, full of excitement and energy. Every milestone and accomplishment they achieve amazes us and we are so blessed to have been chosen as their parents!
Our family is forever grateful to March of Dimes for helping to save our twins' lives. We are honored to serve as the 2019 Dubuque March for Babies Ambassador Family and look forward to walking with our family team, "Double Fun." We hope our story will inspire others to support the March of Dimes and its lifesaving work to help give all mothers a healthy pregnancy and all babies a strong start to life.
