The Gonzalez Family

In December of 2013, Megan and Ricardo Gonzalez were so excited to find out they were expecting their son, Gustavo. When they went to their 22 week ultrasound, their doctor let them know that Gustavo’s organs were all developing well, however due to some complications they needed to prepare to welcome Gustavo earlier than anticipated. The goal was to make it to 24 weeks. Megan spent two weeks in the hospital on bedrest and at 23 weeks, 6 days and 22 hours, Gustavo decided it was time to be born. He was not going to wait a moment longer. They were not prepared to see how tiny Gustavo was and how hard he had to work to breathe. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit team was ready and worked to stabilize Gustavo the minute he was delivered. Shortly after he was born, Gustavo was rushed to the NICU. Ricardo was able to go with him just long enough to take Gustavo’s first picture. He was 1 lb. 6 oz. and barely over a foot long. The Gonzalez family spent five and a half months in the NICU enduring the emotional roller coaster of Gustavo’s progression. One of their favorite days were bath days, even the tiniest of babies get a bath twice a week. That was a precious time for them because they were able to do something that seemed so normal. Gustavo was on a high-powered ventilator for 73 days. After four days on the less invasive ventilator, Megan and Ricardo were finally able to hold their son for the first time. Gustavo came home with oxygen and a feeding tube. He needed around the clock care for the first six months to year at home. It was a blur of doctor appointments, hospital stays and speech therapy and occupational therapy. However with much determination, Gustavo was able to end oxygen treatments and his feeding tube was removed. The Gonzalez family is committed to giving back to the March of Dimes and raising money for the organization. Gustavo was given three doses of surfactant the day he was born. Research funded by the March of Dimes led to the development of surfactant therapy, which helps keep tiny lungs from collapsing. As the 2019 March for Babies Dallas Ambassador Family, they look forward to sharing their story to help support the March of Dimes and its mission of leading the fight for the health of all moms and babies.
