We are very grateful to NBC4 Southern California for being our media sponsor. NBC4 Anchor Carolyn Johnson and “Today in LA” Reporter Annette Arreola will host the opening program and kick off the walk. Registered walkers will receive driving and parking directions the week of the walk via email. Please follow closely and do not rely on GPS as roads will be closed for the walk route. Parking is free. NEW THIS YEAR - The Superhero Sprint is a kids “fun run” that puts the March of Dimes “mission in motion” at March for Babies on April 30! Open to children aged (approx.) 1-12 years old, and especially NICU graduates! For a suggested donation of $20 per child, Superhero Sprint participants will receive a purple March of Dimes cape while supplies last, and the opportunity to run in the Superhero Sprint! Participants will get to run in a 1 block dash using their superpowers to guide them! Parents and supporters can line up along the block to cheer them on! The Superhero Sprint will take place before the walk. Visit www.marchforbabies.org/team/superherosprintnewportbeach for more information and to secure a spot for your child in this event today! Also, all parents/guardians will need to sign the waiver below for any of their children participating in the Superhero Sprint. Forms will need to be e-mailed back to us at hpeloquin@marchofdimes.org before April 30 or brought to the walk. Just click on the link below to access the waiver form.

Francesca Marlysse Rivers

After a difficult pregnancy wrought with weight loss and severe illness, Ritamarie and Jonathan Rivers delivered their baby 7 weeks too soon. Francesca (Frankie) Marlysse was born weighing only 4.5 pounds. Ritamarie never imagined that it would be more than 24 hours after Frankie was delivered that she would get to meet her daughter for the first time. When they did meet, she couldn’t see Frankie’s face due to all of the equipment that was sustaining her in the NICU. Frankie needed help breathing as her lungs hadn’t finished developing, as well as feeding tubes and IVs to help her grow and fight infections. After 8 days in the NICU at St. Joseph’s Hoag Health, Frankie’s parents were finally able to take their baby home. Frankie continued receiving home healthcare assistance for another 3 months. Ritamarie’s mom has been involved with March of Dimes for over 40 years, with Ritamarie and Jonathan participating in the Orange County chapter for 15 years. They have seen the impact prematurity has had on friends and family, but never thought they would be the family sharing their story about how premature birth affected them personally. Frankie turned 3 this past July and is thriving. Her development is on track, and although weight gain has been slow, she is growing and healthy. The Rivers Family walks each year in March for Babies in honor of Frankie and the many premature babies they have known. They support because so many others they’ve met throughout the years haven’t been as lucky as their family. They share their story to raise awareness knowing that their participation will give every baby a fighting chance.
