The Rodriquez Family

Zoe was born at 25 weeks and weighed 1 lb. 11 oz. She spent 102 days in the NICU. Zoe had more than 4 diagnosis at birth, Premature Birth, Low Birth Weight, Anemia of Prematurity,Patent ductus arteriosus –PDA which is a malfunction of blood flow from the heart and respiratory distress due to underdeveloped lungs. The Rodriquez Family had some close calls…Zoe turned blue on multiple occasions. When Zoe was born she was breathing on her own and had little assistance from c-pap.  However, she got tired of working hard to breathe and at six days old she had to be resuscitated after having an adverse reaction to Ativan.  It was the worst day in the NICU. She was put on a ventilator for one month. She had a very large PDA, stage 2 ROP, level 1 brain bleed and had several blood transfusions March of Dimes played a vital role in Zoe’s development. Thanks to March of Dimes grantees have contributed to the medical advances that have greatly improved the chances of survival for all preemies. One huge contribution was surfactant. Since Zoe’s birth, Natalie’s goal has been to educate people and raise awareness. Before Zoe, she had no idea how many babies were born prematurely, it was an eye-opener. She was determined to help. Being an ambassador family meant the Rodriguez’s would be able to share their story and help to inspire others. They had been through the NICU experience, and could talk to parents who may be losing hope. They could help raise money to help ensure that one day all babies would be born healthy.
