Meet the Schmidt Family
Jared and I married in 2011 with plans to start a big family right away. Unfortunately, we were hit hard with infertility and the continual stress that grew month after month, year after year. Our struggle lasted nearly four and a half years until we finally received the news we had been waiting to hear for so long: TWINS! To say we were overcome with happiness would be an understatement. This was the best news of our lives – a dream come true!
The first few months of my pregnancy went very smoothly, and we started planning for our girls’ arrival. At 20 weeks, Abigail was tracking small, and I was referred to a specialist. The next week, a follow-up ultrasound revealed the most heart-wrenching news. Abigail’s heart had stopped beating. We were absolutely devastated.
Because we had lost one of our babies, I was now at an increased risk of preterm labor, so we began taking additional precautions. A few weeks later, Abigail was born unexpectedly. We held her, kissed her, prayed over her and said our goodbyes. It was the hardest thing we have ever done.
Miraculously, Abigail’s twin sister AnnaBelle stayed put, growing and thriving for another five weeks while I was on strict bed rest. AnnaBelle was born at 32 weeks and weighed 4 lbs., 2 oz. She was perfect in every way. AnnaBelle spent 21 days in the NICU before she was strong enough to come home with us. She is loved more than words could ever describe and will forever have her guardian angel twin sister Abigail watching over her.
We are forever grateful to all those who supported us throughout this difficult journey, and we are honored to be the Ambassador Family for this year’s March for Babies. March of Dimes leads the fight for the health of all moms and babies, and we are so thankful to this organization for funding research into the causes and preventions of prematurity. Thank you for supporting this mission so that every baby has the best possible start.
