2021 Mission Family

Meet the Wendel Family

Shelby’s first pregnancy was picture perfect—until it wasn’t. At 12 weeks, Jeffrey and Shelby discovered they were having a healthy baby boy. Then, at 23 weeks, Shelby began spotting and was monitored closely. One week later, at 24 weeks 3 days, Crew entered the world 16 weeks early and weighed only 1 pound 9 ounces and was 11 inches. Twenty-six days later, Shelby held her baby boy for the first time. Crew received several diagnoses and procedures during his NICU stay, including a jet ride to Chicago for specialty eye surgery. After 145 days in the NICU, Crew came home on oxygen for a few months. Crew’s family learned he is a resilient, fighting survivor. Two years later, the Wendels learned they were pregnant again. They were excited but scared about the potential of having another micro-preemie. Due to Shelby’s history with Crew, she was monitored closely. The family was ecstatic; she made it to 24 weeks and then 28 weeks. But at 31 weeks, Shelby started to experience problems and was diagnosed with Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes (PPROM). After 2 weeks in the hospital on bed rest, on June 9, 2020, Margo was born at 32 weeks and 6 days. She weighed 4 pounds 6 ounces and spent 26 days in the NICU. Although Margo’s time in the NICU was considerably shorter than Crew’s, her visit presented challenges of its own as she was born in the middle of a global pandemic! Reflecting on their experiences, Shelby said, “The last few years, our journey has not been an easy one, yet March of Dimes was there for us daily providing support in the NICU. March of Dimes supported us through our entire NICU stay.” Through its NICU Family Support Program, March of Dimes hosted baby development classes, facilitated crafts, served food and provided an ear to listen on the bad days. March of Dimes made each of Crew’s “firsts” unique and memorable for the Wendel family. They celebrated Crew’s first Halloween, Thanksgiving and Santa visit in the NICU. Without March of Dimes, the Wendel family says they may not have even celebrated these milestones. Neither of the Wendel’s premature deliveries were expected, and for them, every bit of normalcy helped. This summer, Crew will celebrate his 3rd birthday, and Margo will be celebrating her 1st birthday.
