2023 Ambassador Family

The Miceli Family

Jaime and John Miceli could not be more excited to hear that they were expecting a baby girl, Giulia, in 2016. Everybody in their family of 4 was over-the-moon about the pregnancy, especially their younger son Ian who was battling a Mitochondrial Disease and desperately wanted a baby sister. After a normal pregnancy, Jaime’s water unexpectedly broke at 23 weeks. Doctors were able to keep baby Giulia inside for an additional 3 weeks. However, Jaime developed an infection and needed to deliver Giulia immediately. For being her smallest baby, weighing just 1 pound 9 ounces, Giulia was, by far, Jaime’s most difficult delivery. Jaime recalls hearing Giulia crying which she describes as “the most wonderful sound ever”. Giulia had life-threatening lung development issues and was baptized before Jaime and John ever got to see her in the NICU. “She was already proving she was quite a little fighter,” Jaime remembers. After spending 88 long days in the NICU, Giulia was able to return home and meet her siblings, Evee and Ian, for the first time. Ian, who was especially excited to spend all the time he could with Giulia, was able to make unforgettable memories with his baby sister before he passed away due to his Mitochondrial Disease in 2017. His memory lives on constantly in the Miceli’s day-to-day life; they even have a teal Christmas tree up year-round to remember his favorite color and holiday. Today, Giulia is an amazing 7-year-old who absolutely loves 1st grade and playing the violin. As a result of her premature birth, Giulia has some long-term complications and an easily compromised immune system, particularly in the winter months. Despite these setbacks, Giulia has an amazing attitude and outlook on life, just like her parents and siblings, and cannot wait to grow up to be a Veterinarian. March of Dimes funded the development of surfactant therapy which is used to treat respiratory distress syndrome in preterm babies that helped save Giulia’s life. The Miceli family knows how physically and mentally difficult extended NICU stays can be for families and supports the March of Dimes so that others do not have to have the same experience that they did. We invite you and your family to join us and the Micelis at the 2023 Chicago March for Babies on April 30th!
