We have two reasons to support this great organization - Alicia and Sean! We hope you agree that they are fantastic motivators to support this cause. Alicia was unexpectedly born almost 12 weeks premature for no known reason. She was born weighing only 1 lb 14.5 oz and spent 10 weeks in the NICU. Many of those weeks she spent just trying to remember to breathe, keep her heart beating, and grow - things most of us just take for granted. Thanks to the care of the many nurses and doctors and to research funded by March of Dimes, today, she is a teenager! We couldn't be more grateful for her amazing well-being. Sean was a totally different experience. Knowing it was a high-risk pregnancy; we were monitored very closely from the start. There were frequent doctor visits and ultrasounds, weekly injections, and a few scares that resulted in light duty and then some general bedrest. Though born early at 35 weeks, he weighed 6 lbs 8 oz. He had no NICU time and was home with us within the week (had to stay a couple days for jaundice). He is a happy, healthy ten year old. We are lucky enough to have a second healthy preemie. The March of Dimes is an organization devoted to babies. They fund medical research to prevent prematurity. They supported the development of NICUs. They are behind the folic acid public awareness campaign to decrease neural tube deficiencies. They fight for government support to protect pregnant women and babies. They also provide support and education through community outreach programs and their website. The list goes on. We raise money to help them continue this important mission. It helped us have healthy babies despite their prematurity and hopefully they can work to stop the rise in premature births and reverse the trend, giving all babies a healthy start.
