Every year, half a million babies in the U.S. are born prematurely.
Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death and many life long disabilities. The funds we raise in March for Babies support research that saves babies' lives.
As many of you know, we lost our son, Matthew Jackson Miller on October 15, 2007 to SIDS.
I was nearly 6 months pregnant when my water broke, after 10 weeks in the hospital on bed rest, Matthew was born 7 weeks early. Matthew spent 4 weeks in the NICU before coming home to our family. He was home for 6 weeks when we woke up and he wasn't breathing. He was exactly 10 weeks old when we lost our prince.
Matthew was in good health and the time we had with him is something we will always treasure. We know that the March of Dimes and their amazing medical advances (primarily Surfectant which allowed his lungs to expand and breath on their own and indomethacin which closed his PDA allowed his heart to function properly), are the reason we had the time that we had with our little man.
The research done because of March of Dimes allowed us to have 70 precious days with Matthew, loving him, knowing him and being with him in a way we never thought we would be able to. We can help raise the money necessary to prevent more babies from being born prematurely and more families from living through the nightmare of loosing a child. Since Matthew's passing, our family suffered three miscarriages before welcoming 2 full-term and healthy girls 2 years apart.
This is a direct result of research done by March of Dimes. In addition, since we've been raising money and awareness, AB-1731 went into affect, mandating newborn screening for heart defects for all newborns prior to them leaving the hospital. The passing of this law is what caught Matthew's youngest sister, Charlotte's, heart murmur and ensured that we received the proper medical care and attention for it.
March of Dimes and March for Babies is near and dear to our hearts and our family. Without their dedication, work and research we would have never had the time we had with Matthew and wouldn't have continued to grow our family after. Sign up or donate today!
