Every day, thousands of babies are born too soon, too small and often very sick. I'm walking in March for Babies because I want to do something about this. And I need your help.
In June 2011, my water broke at just 26 weeks pregnant. A week later, I got an infection and was rushed to an emergency c-section to deliver my twins, Jackson and Amelia at only 27 weeks and 2 days gestation. I didn't get to hold my babies or to hear them cry when they were born. They were too small to cry. They were whisked away to the NICU after I got a quick peak at them from a distance. We spent 54 days in the NICU. They needed blood transfusions and surfactant. Jackson needed steroids, antibiotics, a diuretic for fluid in his lungs and many many other medical interventions. They were both on feeding tubes for most of the first 2 months of their lives. Jackson came home on oxygen and an apnea monitor that he stayed with until he was 14 months old. There was a time when we were seeing 8 different specialists for a variety of issues from their prematurity from slow growth to issues with motor skills. They both have seen occupational, physical and speech therapists to help with their developmental delays. Jackson began a special education preschool program this year for his developmental delays and I'm excited to say he is doing very well! Although not quite "caught up" he is making big improvements every day! After all the challenges they faced, I'm happy to say they are very happy, healthy 4 year olds!
A year and a half later we were blessed to have a HEALTHY and FULL TERM pregnancy and now have a wild and crazyyear old named Benjamin in our family. The prenatal care and help I received to reach full term with my second pregnancy is from the research and technology that the March of Dimes funded! My family would not be what it is today if it weren't for the work of the March of Dimes. New developments every day are helping more and more babies live and helping decrease the number of preterm births and YOU can be a part of this! This is why we March for Babies!
