Why we march

We walk for Havana Celeste Rush who was born at 26 weeks and two days on July 8th, 2011. She weighed in at 1 pound 8 ounces and spent 124 days in the NICU overcoming most typical preemie ailments such as ROP, PDA, and Chronic Lung Disease. Having a child so early is filled with many emotions: panic, fear, grief and ultimately for us, joy.

Havana was the product of a lot of love and years of infertility treatments and heartbreaking losses. In March 2011 we were so excited to move past the first trimester, and in June 2011 we moved into viability. To our surprise, I was dialated and my water was about to break at our 25 week ultrasound. Havana held on for another nine days getting shots to help her lungs grow a little bit stronger. On day nine, my body had gone into labor and Havana was distressed. Patrick made it to the hospital in the nick-of-time to witness the birth of our daughter. We spent the next four months riding the NICU rollercoaster. We then took her home on oxygen for the next year. Havana had regular doctors appointments, and met with specialists and therapists across NC. We also lived in isolation for the first two years for fear any respiratory infection could be lethal. It was a hard time for our family but we were able to watch our little miracle grow and help her acheive her health successes and normal developmental milestones like eating mangos, blowing kisses, and first words.

Havana has continued to develop more normally than we could have ever imagined given her extremely early arrival. She has gone to school at Greensboro Montessori and Canterbury. She has made numerous lasting friendships. She is learning to read and jumps on trampolines. Havana always wants to go out to eat at Moe's, dance with her friends, and visit her Dad at his office where she collects quarters from Tom. She also became a big sister to her twin brothers, Quincy and Walker. She is remarkable in that she is so normal.

Prematurity stole the pregnancy, the birth, and the full term daughter we had hoped and planned. However, we feel incredibly fortunate and truly blessed that we are able to celebrate our daughter and all her achievements. Patrick and I directly benefited from the work of March of Dimes and believe passionately in their goal to end prematurity. Please join us to support the cause.

Always inspired by the strength of your family! My cousin’s daughter has a similar story and is thankfully now a thriving 3.5 year old. Such an important cause. XO
