On Christmas Day 2010, I gave birth to twin boys - a joyful moment tempered by their premature arrival at only 24 weeks (16 weeks early). Our boys, Liam and Ewan, weighed under two pounds each, and had a series of health problems related to their premature birth. The boys, lovingly known as The Pirates, battled a series of infections, surgeries, and blood transfusions. Every day was a life or death struggle. Tragically, Ewan passed away in our arms, with Liam by our side, on March 10, 2011... a very short life of only 75 days. Liam would remain in the Neonatal intensive Care Unit for 109 days, coming home 3 days before his due date. He has been thriving ever since. He has been the March of Dimes Ambassador Baby at many local fundraising events. He is a feisty 11 year old and loves saving his coins "for the babies." From our earliest days in the NICU, we became aware of the huge impact that March Of Dimes reasearch, and the medical interventions that have resulted, played on the care our babies received. We are convinced that Liam would not have survived his early birth, and the resulting complications, without the MOD's contributions to care in the NICU.
Team Pirate Power was formed three days after Ewan's death. We are proud to be a top Family Fundraising Team in the South Bay Area, and a Top 5 team in California. In the 11 years since we formed, we have raised nearly $190,000 for the March Of Dimes! Every day, thousands of babies are born too soon, too small and often very sick. Our team is walking in March for Babies because we want to do something about this. I know you care, too. That's why I'm asking you to join us. It's easy: just click the join this team button. If you can't walk with us, please help by donating to our team. You can do so right on this page. Thank you for helping us give all babies a healthy start!
With preterm birth rates continuing to rise, the U.S. remains among the most dangerous developed nations for childbirth, especially for women and babies of color.
At March for Babies: A Mother of a Movement™ you're lifting up communities, creating connections and taking action to make America a more equitable place and ensure that every mom and baby is healthy.
Together, we’re marching to raise funds and awareness to transform the health of all families!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
