For Josh and Amber Mattick, the first moments of their son’s life were frightening. Born one month early, doctors quickly knew something was wrong with their son. His lungs were underdeveloped and he needed help breathing. Jaxson needed specialized care and was airlifted to Rochester. <P> Jaxson spent two weeks in the NICU. He overcame jaundice and learned to breathe on his own. <P> March of Dimes pushed for a regionalized system of newborn intensive care units (NICUs) so that specialized care was in reach of all babies. March of Dimes also funded the development of surfactant therapy, a life-saving therapy to treat Jaxson’s lungs. <P> “There have been so many babies that have been given a chance to live because of the March of Dimes,” said Amber. “It should not take a horrible experience to want to help. Encourage all your friends and co-workers to get involved in helping babies have a healthy start.”
