Meet the Lamberts

Jimmy and I are the parents of two babies that were born prematurely. In 2013, we found out we were having identical twin girls. Halfway through my pregnancy, it was discovered that our girls suffered from Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) which was causing an unequal share of the placenta. After a laser surgery to sever the shared connections, my water broke at 24 weeks pregnant. Our girls held on for 8 more weeks and were born at 32 weeks, 8 weeks premature. The stress from the TTTS caused a heart condition in our larger baby and Jocelyn needed heart surgery after birth. Sadly, her heart was too scarred. After 15 short days, we had to make the decision to turn off the machines and say goodbye to our little angel. Lexi, our 2 pound 3 ounce miracle, only needed to learn how to eat and hold her body temp. After just 6 weeks in the NICU and before her actual due date, at 3 pounds 12 ounces, we were able to bring her home where she continues to amaze us. The March of Dimes funds lifesaving research and programs and works to end premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality. When Jocelyn was born we needed to give her a little more time to get stronger for surgery. To do this we needed to keep the large artery that lets blood bypass the baby’s lungs open. Usually this artery closes shortly after birth but because of a medicine created by March of Dimes grantees, we were able to give her this time. Without that medicine we wouldn’t have even had the chance to get our girls together, to read to Jocelyn, or to have her baptized. The March of Dimes gave us those 15 days with her and we are so thankful for those memories. But even aside from the funding and research supported by the March of Dimes, my family was given something more. During our times of worry, stress and grief, we were given hope. The March of Dimes website has blog areas where you can search on different subjects and we were able to locate and read stories from others who have been through it. When the doctor’s faces gave us the belief that there was little chance at a positive outcome, we were able to find that positive story and say to ourselves, we can be that story. When we felt alone in our grief, we found others that have experienced those same emotions and we didn’t feel as lost.
