Our March for Babies celebration is still on, but it looks a little different! We are rapidly preparing for a new, virtualized event that will be fun and engaging for everyone. This change in format aligns with the newly released CDC guidance for large events, to help ensure the safety and health of our participants. More details on our new format to come soon!

ABOUT MARCH FOR BABIES
It's March for Babies weekend in the Cedar Valley. Walkers will be out in force support healthy babies! We will be at Gateway Park rain or shine this SATURDAY! We will be serving hot coffee, bagels, and snacks starting at 9am. Even if the weather has you down, remember that babies are born in all kinds of weathers. Come celebrate with us!

Meet the Schares Family

In 2011, we thrilled to be expecting a baby boy due in May. But at 22 weeks gestation, on January 1st, Sara’s water unexpectedly broke, and we rushed to the hospital. We had no idea what was happening to our son, and we were transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The next few days were a blur as steroids were administered to Sara to help develop the baby’s lungs and blood vessels, as they discussed his chance at survival, best plans of care, and possible complications for Sara and our unborn son. After two days of hospital bedrest, we returned home for a few days to finish preparing for our son. But on Wednesday, January 5th, we returned to Iowa City, knowing what was coming next. Maddox was born the next day– January 6, 2011 at 23 weeks, 4 days gestation, weighing only 1 lb, 4 oz. We remained in the NICU for the next 125 days, enduring an emotional and physical roller coaster. Maddox persevered over low birthweight, jaundice, and respiratory distress syndrome among many other things. Maddox is now almost 4 years old, and our wild and healthy little boy doesn’t let anything stop him! We do keep a close eye on his lungs and asthma when he is sick, but his development and health is excellent. We are very fortunate, and realize every day how amazing Maddox is doing. We are excited to be serving as the 2015 Cedar Valley March for Babies ambassador family, and to be giving back to a foundation that has given us so much. Sharing our story will help bring awareness to the importance of the March of Dimes and their mission, while also raising essential funds to support their life-saving research.
