Journey Lyons

Journey Elaine Lyons was born on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, three months early of her expected due date. Throughout my pregnancy I had been experiencing elevated blood pressure and dehydration issues, and was on a 2-week bed rest directive. I was admitted to St. Thomas of Rutherford County Hospital and monitored. Delivering my baby at 28 weeks was the farthest thing from my mind. In an instant, things took a drastic turn for the worst. Journey’s heart rate was dropping and it was necessary to move quickly and deliver her via an emergency cesarean. My eyes were welling up because I knew there was nothing I could do but trust God and leave it in the medical staff’s hands. They prepared me for the operating room and wheeled me away as Journey’s due date was advanced to: now or never! During the surgery they found that my placenta had ruptured and detached, leaving the baby without oxygen and a flowing blood supply for some time. I too had lost a lot of blood, and we both had to receive transfusions. Journey was very weak and quite small, weighing 2.0 lbs., and her status remained touch and go; they feared bleeding in the brain, and her possibly being brain dead. At that point my parents, family, friends, the St. Thomas Hospital staff (doctors, nurses, housekeeping techs, dietary staff, everyone in our wing) joined hands in a circle and prayed for Journey. Journey was given a very slim chance of survival, but her odds increased every hour that she lived. Journey was placed on a ventilator right after her birth, and my little fighter no longer needed it after the first 24-48 hours. Soon following was a wet diaper, so her kidneys along with her little lungs may have been very small but oh so mighty, what we like to call Lyons-Strong. I just remember the doctor saying, “Journey continues to exceed expectations, and she is a feisty little fighter, a true miracle baby!” She made it past the 72 hour window. Journey’s tests and vitals could only be described as AWESOME. Each day she grew stronger, gained weight, and was a better day for Journey and her family who loved her. Shattering all of our predictions but to our joy and amazement, Journey spent a total of 55 days in the NICU. Miraculously, she came home on June 22, 2014, exactly one month before her due date! - Valanna Lyons
